Legal Aid Queensland Intranet Design
"Thank you Harmony for all of your work on this project. Your designs really hit the mark and exceeded our expectations. It has been a pleasure to work with you."
- Miranda Greer, Communications Manager, Legal Aid Queensland
The challenge
Legal Aid Queensland needed a series of design concepts for the upcoming redesign of their internal Intranet site.
I was provided with wireframes produced by usability experts Peak Usability, and was responsible for crafting an inviting look-and-feel in line with the client's branding. The designs also needed to be compatible with Microsoft SharePoint 2007 (MOSS).
The outcome
I created a number of intranet design concepts demonstrating visual treatment for the homepage, landing pages, and internal pages (screenshots on left).
The designs were based on Legal Aid Queensland's new visual branding of clean whites, greens and blues, with minimal photography.
As the pages contained large amounts of information I also focused on providing users with a clear visual hierarchy to help them quickly find what they were looking for.
The Legal Aid Queensland Communications team were very happy with the end result and felt the needs of the project were fully met.

Department of the Premier and Cabinet (Queensland)
www.premiers.qld.gov.au
The challenge
The Department of the Premier and Cabinet needed to completely redesign and rebuild their 1500+ page department website which was over 5 years old. It was not meeting their users' needs, looked very dated, and did not meet current Queensland Government web standards.

The outcome
This was a huge team project spanning 6 months and involving multiple levels of stakeholders. It required a complete overhaul of not just the visual design, but the code, information architecture, and written content.
At the close of the project the number of pages had been consolidated to 800, nearly half the original number. This has resulted in cleaner search results, simpler site maintenance, and better search engine rankings.
For the new design I implemented a timeless, classic style and a corporate blue color scheme in line with the Department's role as a lead agency and an authority on policy and protocol.

My role

Complete accessibility testing and reporting was another of my responsibilities. I also provided design direction and helped with usability testing.

Anna Bligh - The Premier of Queensland

The challenge
Premier Anna Bligh needed a way to engage with Queenslanders and promote news and initiatives. The visual design needed to be upbeat and task-focused while still complying with Queensland Government CUE website standards and maintaining a government look-and-feel.
The outcome
A new visual design was crafted which incorporated a bright yet authoritative color scheme, a jQuery image rotation for top stories, a 3-column grid-based layout to display lots of information in a user-friendly way, and a focus on integration with social networking sites like Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.

Octopus Garden Design
www.octopusgardendesign.com
The challenge
Landscape Architect, Gerrad Everson, needed a website that would showcase his work,
impart a sense of his modern retro style, and set him apart in a highly competitive industry.
The outcome
Gerrad's unique style called for bright and playful colors, and a textured look-and-feel.
Polaroid photos and textured borders add a touch of whimsy while showcasing Gerrad's beautiful garden designs.
The primary goal of the site was to encourage visitors to contact Gerrad to enquire about their next garden project, so enquiry forms were included on almost every page, and calls-to-action were sprinkled throughout the written content.
Gerrad was very happy with the end result and felt it accurately reflected his business branding and unique architectural style.
My role
I managed this project from start to finish including creation of wireframes, visual design concepts, user profiling reports, PHP form integration, jQuery Lightbox image gallery, accessibility testing, CMS integration, and post go-live site testing and handover.
For this project I outsourced the HTML development in order to meet the client's desired deadline.
Technologies

Queensland Government Fair Trading
The challenge
The Department of Justice engaged me to create web design concepts for the Fair Trading Queensland website after it became a part of their portfolio.
Our aim was to make the Fair Trading Queensland site look and feel like part of the existing Department of Justice website. We also worked together to improve the visual design, usability, accessibility, and CUE compliance of the site.

View a screenshot of an original internal page (GIF, 103 KB)
The outcome
I created a number of web design concepts demonstrating visual treatment for the homepage, common landing pages, internal pages, and form listings (screenshots on left).
The designs were based on the existing department style guide and influenced the later re-design of the entire Department of Justice website. Later user testing of the new design was extremely positive:
"Major improvements in task completion and task completion rates between the old site (10 out of 21 tasks completed) and the new one (20 out of 21 tasks completed)."
"Participants found the website easy to use and pleasant to look at, despite its volume of information (user satisfaction was 50% higher)."
"Users were particularly attracted to the smiling face on the home page."
My role
I was responsible for designing the new website concepts, accessibility advice, and adherence to Queensland Government CUE standards and W3C standards. Once complete I handed the designs over to the department's internal development team for integration with their custom content management system CMS.

EPA Victoria - Air Quality Index
www.epa.vic.gov.au/air/airmap/
The challenge
The Victorian Government Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) needed a more user-friendly and dynamic way to represent changes in Victoria's air quality.
The outcome
The result was a simple and user-friendly online application that allowed Victorians to quickly and easily find air quality data for any specific date and time. Data is fed into the application automatically from the EPA's air monitoring stations.
My role
I was responsible for the front-end design and HTML build of this application. It was then handed over to development for integration with the EPA's air monitoring stations.
Technologies
Pen and paper, Adobe Photoshop, HTML, CSS.
