Portfolio

This is an overview of my best work in web site and user interface design not under NDA. My combined resume and portfolio can also be downloaded (PDF, 140 kb).

Footy Colours Day (2007)
www.footycoloursday.com.au

Footy Colours Day is a promotional event run yearly by the Australian Bone Marrow Donor Institute. The client wanted to give the existing Footy Colours Day website (screenshot here) a clean, modern look that would appeal more to corporate visitors.

As the budget for the project was limited I needed to keep the design simple to minimise build time. The result is a clean, modern look with strong corporate appeal. The client was very happy with the end result.

If you would like to know more about the design decisions behind this site a detailed Design Rationale is available here in PDF format.

EPA Victoria Air Pollutions Map (2007)
Online application

This online application was developed for the Victorian Environmental Protection Authority to replace their existing graph-based display of air pollution data.

This was a challenging project, requiring a large amount of information to be displayed without looking cluttered. The design also incorporated an application look-and-feel to encourage visitors to "play" with the online data.

I was responsible for the application's visual design and HTML / CSS, which was then handed over to a .NET and XML developer for integration into the client's site.

SOS Computer Services (2007)

SOS Computer Services provide computer products, services and support to the NSW Hunter Valley. They required a website redesign to bring their existing website (screenshot here) up-to-date with modern web and design standards.

This site presented some unique challenges in that only a small amount of content was available for each page, and the style needed to be modern but classic so as not to run the risk of appearing dated with time.

To achieve this I used a clean blue and white color scheme to appeal to SOS's predominantly male customers, and to emphasise the company's focus on technology (blue being traditionally associated with technology websites). The width of the design was kept small to make the most of limited content, and at the end of each page I included a call-to-action to encourage site visitors to contact SOS directly - this being one of the primary goals of the redesign.

The end result is a clean, professional site which loads quickly, is user-friendly and cross-browser compatible, and will stand the test of time thanks to a classic look-and-feel and adherence to web standards. The client was very happy with the result.

Alarin Music (2006)
www.alarinmusic.com

Alarin Music is a personal project for my own electronic music composition. I chose a dark blue color scheme, statistically popular with the predominantly male electronic music community, and the entire site has a very strong usability focus combined with complete separation of style from content using web standards, php includes, and modular css.

This site was quite challenging to build as I chose to use the "holy-grail" 3-column liquid layout which creates it's own set of cross-browser problems; but I managed to tame it in the end, producing a cross-browser 3-column css layout that adheres to WC3 xhtml and css web standards.

Global Banking & Securities Transactions (2005)
www.gbst.com.au

GBST is one of Australia's leading providers of transaction technology and this is reflected in a neat and solid corporate site design. I was responsible for the design, development, testing and maintenance of this site, including regular content and site syndication (RSS) updates.

A color-scheme of blue, green and silver was chosen to appeal to GBST's predominantly male customer demographic, and design was kept simple with a strong focus on ease-of-use for GBST's busy working customers.

Ord Minnett (2005)
www.ords.com.au

Ord Minnett are one of Australia's leading wealth management groups. They required a simple but effective web site which reflected their corporate branding, and could display a large amount of information without appearing cluttered.

The Ord Minnett site relies heavily on Java technology to provide constantly changing market information on the home page. To achieve this I worked extensively with the in-house J2EE development team to combine functionality with user-friendly design.

As content was still being developed at the time of design, Ord Minnett also needed a site with clean, well-structured and documented code so that content could be added later by in-house staff. In addition I provided the client with a complete site update manual and style guide.

Australian Grain Exchange (2005)
Secure web-based trading platform

The Australian Grain Exchange required a secure web-based trading platform to appeal to a wide demographic including grain producers, traders, brokers and consumers. Because of this the interface for the trading platform needed to be kept simple, effective and easy to use.

My role in this project involved designing and building the user interface in html, and working with the in-house J2EE development team to produce new pages based on functional requirements.
